KLSD’s rising budgets ‘failed miserably’ to address enrollment declines
According to a chart that tracks the KLSD budget and budgeted students since the 1999-2000 school year through 2021-22, the district budget has increased 100% over that period, while the student population has decreased 25.7% (it actually plummeted 29.3% from its peak in 2002-03). The cost per student increased from $14,517 in 1999-2000 to $38,995 for the school year 2021-22, a whopping 168.6% increase.
All data used in the chart has come from the budget books as published by the district.
Since 2006-07 when the percent change in the cost per student started to be higher than the percent change in the budget, the administration and the school board have failed miserably in taking corrective action to address the continuing decline in enrollment by proposing and passing ever increasing budgets.
