Trailing visiting New Rochelle by four runs heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, Fox Lane rallied to pull off a 13-12 comeback walk-off win on May 9.
Fox Lane led 8-5 heading into the seventh inning, but New Rochelle rallied to send the game to extra innings. The Huguenots then scored four runs in the top of the eighth to take a 12-8 lead, setting the stage for a dramatic Fox Lane comeback.
Victoria Bodine started the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk and that was followed by a Quoya Schnell single. Grace Cleveland’s triple drove in Bodine and Schnell to cut the deficit to 12-10. Megan Ruckle and Lyla Loria both walked to load the bases. Hannah Getman’s walk brought home Cleveland to make it 12-11. Then Katie Cristiano roped a ball up the middle, scoring Ruckle and Loria for the walk-off victory.
“It was a great game and the girls never gave up,” Fox Lane coach ToniAnn Licata said. “I was extremely proud of them. There was a moment in the seventh when we started to lose it, but they all came together to get out of the inning and score some runs in the eighth to win it. If we can keep this momentum up, then I think we will make playoffs interesting.”
Licata credited pitcher Sydney Hurwitz for “pitching a great game.” The coach added that Hurwitz “really allowed her defense to work behind her for the win.” She also battled out of the jam in the top of the eighth inning after the Huguenots scored four runs.
The defense was also stout as Schnell turned a double play by herself at shortstop and Cleveland made some “great catches” in right field, Licata noted. “All around, the defense worked really hard and really fought for this game,” the first-year head coach said.
Fox Lane fell to host White Plains 15-0 in a five-inning league game May 10.
The Foxes, who are 7-10, were scheduled to conclude the regular season when they traveled to Port Chester on May 12.
John Jay edged visiting Brewster in a 9-8 league win on May 5. The Wolves led 9-2 heading into the sixth inning but Brewster rallied to cut the deficit to one and Jay was able to hold on.
“The biggest thing was perseverance,” John Jay coach Stephen DelMoro said. “We have been talking about it a lot this year, and we grinded this one out. Some timely hitting, and executing in the field, on the bases and up at bat, were the difference makers.”
Ava Kersh and Ashley Buatte each collected two hits and drove in three runs to lead the Wolves’ offense. Carolina Cerna and Eva Falino both had two hits and an RBI. Emma Klares picked up the win in the circle with Olivia Blank earning the save.
John Jay lost to host Somers 14-12 in a league contest on May 9.
The 8-9 Wolves were scheduled to host Mahopac on May 11, welcome Yorktown today, Friday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m., and conclude the regular season with another home game against North Salem on Sunday, May 15, at 1 p.m.
“I feel good where we are at heading into sectionals,” DelMoro said. “We still have three games this week, so a lot can happen this week. The biggest thing is that we keep the confidence going. We always want to be peaking at the right time and I feel we are playing some of our best softball right now. I am looking forward to what this week will bring for us and how things shake out.”
