Westmoreland expands wildlife navigation courses

Plotting their route
The Hulme family from Chappaqua carefully plots out the route they will follow in the Westmoreland Sanctuary’s Orienteering Meet.
The program is part of Westmoreland Sanctuary’s expanding wildlife navigation, or orienteering skills, courses, with two new programs, “Wildlife Navigation Basic” and “Wildlife Navigation Advanced.”
Executive director Steve Ricker is currently outlining programs for the next year. The sanctuary has had an increasing problem with hikers getting lost in the woods. Other nature centers have reported the same problem. The programs aim to educate both police/emergency personnel and hikers on how to navigate the woods.
The sanctuary is now working with Fox Lane Middle School to set up a course there to help enrich their curriculum on navigation. Once students have some instruction on how to navigate, Westmoreland, in association with Hudson Valley Orienteering, holds orienteering events where people can try out their newfound skills in a friendly, safe environment. For the more advanced competitor, difficult courses are set up.
Hudson Valley Orienteering is offering support for the program by harnessing technology to streamline the event. If after learning and trying out orienteering people like it, they can join and or participate in HVO events.
